Elements and Gunas in a Chart: The Strongest Planet Rule

How Parashara gives a whole chart one element and one guna, and when the rule weakens.

On this page
⚡ The short answer

Each planet has an element and a guna. Parashara says a whole chart takes the element of its strongest planet. If several planets are equally strong, the chart is mixed. The guna works the same way. A weak planet gives only part of its element. A debilitated one turns it round. The Nava app does not compute this. This page explains the rule only.

☕ One planet sets the tone

The basics page on the nine grahas gives each planet its element and its guna. Mars is fire, Mercury earth, Jupiter ether, Venus water and Saturn air. Two late chapters of Parashara's book use those lists on a whole chart.

The rule is short. Find the strongest planet at birth. Its element is the chart's element. If many planets are equally strong, the chart is a mix. (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 76, vv. 3–4, p. 928.)

Chapter 76 also brings in the Sun and the Moon. A strong Sun makes a fiery chart and a strong Moon a watery one. (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 76, v. 5, p. 929.) So fire comes from the Sun or Mars, and water from the Moon or Venus. (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 76, vv. 11–15, pp. 930–931.)

Strength scales the result. A strong planet gives its element in full. A weaker one gives less, in proportion. (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 76, v. 16, p. 931.) A planet that is debilitated, or sits in a difficult house, gives the reverse. A planet with no strength gives it only in name. (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 76, v. 17, p. 931.)

Chapter 77 does the same with the gunas. It names the Sun, the Moon and Jupiter as sattva planets, and Mars and Saturn as tamas. When the planets are equal, the result is mixed. (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 77, vv. 1–4, p. 932.) If one guna is clearly ahead, it decides. (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 77, v. 10, pp. 933–934.)

At a glance

📋 The table
  • Fire: Sun or Mars
  • Earth: Mercury
  • Ether (space): Jupiter
  • Water: Moon or Venus
  • Air: Saturn
  • (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 76, vv. 11–15, pp. 930–931.)
💡 Common mix-ups
  • The rule uses the strongest planet, not the lagna lord and not the Moon sign.
  • A strong planet counts in full; a weak one only in part; a debilitated one in reverse.
  • Jupiter is a sattva planet in chapter 77 but a rajas planet in chapter 3. The two chapters differ.
  • This page explains how the rule is counted. It describes no one's nature.

Frequently asked questions

Is Jupiter sattva or rajas?

Parashara's book gives both. Chapter 3 puts Jupiter with Mercury and Venus as rajas (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 3, v. 22, p. 30). Chapter 77 puts Jupiter with the Sun and the Moon as sattva (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 77, vv. 1–4, p. 932). This page reports both and does not choose.

How do I know which planet is strongest?

These verses do not say how to measure it. The book teaches strength in other chapters: dignity, house, direction and more. Without a strength count, the rule cannot be applied.

Does birth fix a person's guna?

Not on its own, says the same chapter. Qualities come from the parents, the time of birth and the company one keeps. Of these, time and company count for more than parentage. (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 77, v. 14, p. 934.)

Does the Nava app work out a chart's element?

The Nava app does not compute this. This page explains the rule only.

Deep dive: applying the rule

The steps in order. Where the lists come from.

🔥 The steps in order
  • 1. Rank the planets by strength at birth.
  • 2. Take the strongest. Its element and guna are the chart's. If two or more tie, the chart is mixed.
  • 3. Scale by strength: full if strong, partial if weak.
  • 4. If that planet is debilitated or in a difficult house, read the element in reverse; if it has no strength, it counts in name only.

(Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 76, vv. 3–4, p. 928; Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 76, v. 16, p. 931; Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 76, v. 17, p. 931.) For example, if Saturn were the strongest planet in a chart, the book would call the chart airy. The book goes on to describe each element's temperament; this page does not repeat those descriptions.

🪐 Where the lists come from

Each planet's element, guna, cabinet role and direction are on the nine grahas. What a planet's dignity does to its strength is on exaltation and debilitation.
