Shravana Dwadashi and the Vishnu-shrinkhala Yoga

When the Dwadashi tithi meets the Shravana star: the evening test, the Trayodashi limit, and the rare day Ekadashi touches both.

On this page
⚡ The short answer

Shravana Dwadashi is a Dwadashi tithi joined by the Shravana star, in either half of the month. Ahnika Grantham asks for the full star, prefers the union across the evening, and sets aside a Dwadashi that Trayodashi touches for 6 nazhigai before sunset. When an Ekadashi itself touches both Dwadashi and the star, the book calls it Vishnu-shrinkhala. For the date itself, the printed almanac of your tradition decides. A book's rule explains a date; it does not overrule the almanac.

☕ The book's conditions

The vow needs a Dwadashi, of the bright or the dark half, united with the Shravana star. The union must be full, not partial (Ahnika Grantham, Vol. 1 (Sri Ahobila Mutt), pp. 334–335).

Trayodashi must not touch the Dwadashi for 3 muhurtham (6 nazhigai) before sunset; if it does, the day is unfit. The star before Shravana, Uttara Ashadha, must not touch it either.

The book prefers the union across the evening, from one sunset to the next, and ranks the first evening higher. It also records a midday view for those keeping the vow for a wish, and reconciles the two: midday for a wish, evening for those seeking release.

Its own three-part summary for the evening view: no Uttara Ashadha touch, the evening union with Shravana, and no Trayodashi touch for 6 nazhigai before sunset.

At a glance

📋 Vishnu-shrinkhala
  • An Ekadashi that touches both Dwadashi and the Shravana star (Ahnika Grantham, Vol. 1 (Sri Ahobila Mutt), p. 334).
  • Dwadashi arriving during the Ekadashi's night is a touch.
  • Shravana held within the Ekadashi makes that touch the special time.
  • When Shravana joins the Ekadashi by day, both vows are kept together.
💡 In Nava's calendar
  • What Nava does: Nava gives the Smartha Ekadashi and Sri Vaishnava Ekadashi days, but no Shravana Dwadashi and no Vishnu-shrinkhala day.
  • Nava does not compute this rule. This page explains it as the books give it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Nava show Shravana Dwadashi?

No. Nava gives the Ekadashi days only. For Shravana Dwadashi, follow your almanac.

Can Shravana Dwadashi fall in the dark half?

Yes. The book allows a Dwadashi of either half, as long as the star’s union is full.

Why does the evening matter?

The book prefers the union across the evening for those seeking release, and the midday union for those keeping the vow for a wish.

Deep dive: testing one Dwadashi

Sunset 18:00. 6 nazhigai before sunset is 15:36.

🔍 Three checks in turn
  1. Is the Shravana star with the Dwadashi across the evening? If it is only partly there, the union is not full.
  2. Has the star before it, Uttara Ashadha, already left? Its touch is not allowed.
  3. Does Trayodashi begin before 15:36? Then it touches the Dwadashi for 6 nazhigai before sunset, and the day is set aside.
