A Good Dasha Needs Strength, Not Only Friendship

The classical tests read the dasha lord's own sign, house and strength first; the friendship of two lords counts only on top of that.

⚡ The short answer

Parashara judges a dasha two ways: from what its lord signifies, and from where the lord is placed. A lord in the lagna, exalted, or in its own or a friend's sign is counted well placed; one in the 6th, 8th or 12th, debilitated or in an enemy's sign, ill placed. Jataka Parijata adds bindus, combustion and sixfold strength, and says two lords' friendship helps only when both are strong. Friendship is a modifier; the lord's own state comes first.

☕ The driver before the passenger

Two people getting on well in a car does not make the journey safe; the driver and the car matter first. The books treat a dasha the same way: the lord's own condition is the driver, and how it gets on with the bhukti lord comes after.

Parashara gives two kinds of result in a dasha: the general, from what the planet signifies, and the distinctive, from where it is placed (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 47, vv. 1–2, p. 576). The results grow with the lord's strength (ch. 47, vv. 3–4, pp. 576–577). The lord counts as well placed in the lagna, exalted, or in its own or a friend's sign, and ill placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th, debilitated or in an enemy's sign, read at the start of its dasa (ch. 47, vv. 5–6, p. 577) as well as at birth (ch. 48, p. 591). The tests, together, are in the card “What the books test in a dasha lord” below.

Jataka Parijata sets out the same picture in more detail (Jataka Parijata (tr. Subramanya Sastri), ch. XVIII, vv. 4–5, p. 1006): bindus above or below the average, the 10th, 11th and 1st houses, combustion, and full sixfold strength. On friendship it is plain: two lords that are friends and both strong make the period prosper, two that are enemies and weak may not (ch. XVIII, v. 16, p. 1013). Brihat Jataka calls the dasa of a planet without strength empty (Brihat Jataka, ch. VIII, v. 5). Jataka Parijata draws on Brihat Jataka here, so their agreement is one tradition, not two witnesses.

Nava's reading of your running period follows this order. It reads the lord's general significations, its placement at birth against Parashara's lists, the houses it rules, and Jataka Parijata's rules for the period, and shows the themes that pass its safety checks. Your Period weighs the mahadasha lord at birth and at the start of its dasa. In the day score's period part, the two lords' dignity and house are the base and their friendship a smaller term on top.

What Nava follows: the lord's dignity and house first and friendship second, as the books order them. Three steps are Nava's own choice: a lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th at the start of its dasha reads as poor, as Parashara says, and otherwise its state at birth and at the start are averaged; a bhukti lord is read at birth only; and an exalted or debilitated lord is judged first by that dignity.

Placement, dignity, strength, then friendship

📋 What the books test in a dasha lord
  • Well placed: in the lagna, exalted, in its own sign or a friend's sign.
  • Ill placed: in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, debilitated, or in an enemy's sign.
  • When: at birth, and again at the moment its dasha begins.
  • Strength: results grow with it; a lord without strength gives an empty, faint dasha.
  • Also weighed: bindus above or below the average, combustion, the company of malefics.
  • Friendship: two friendly lords help only when both are strong.
💡 Common mix-ups
  • Mix-up: a bhukti lord friendly to the dasha lord makes a good period. Friendship helps only when both lords are strong; each lord's own state comes first.
  • Mix-up: a natural benefic always gives a good dasha. Parashara gives Jupiter and Venus bad-placement lists too; placement and strength decide.
  • Mix-up: the lord is judged at birth only. Parashara also reads it at the start of its dasha.

Frequently asked questions

What does Nava read for my running period?

The running lord's general significations, its placement at birth against Parashara's lists for that planet, the houses it rules, and Jataka Parijata's rules for the dasha and bhukti. What passes the safety checks is shown as themes on the You tab; some topics are held back until an astrologer has signed them off, and the screen says so.

Does a weak lord's dasha bring nothing?

The books say its good shows only faintly, felt more in the mind than in events (Jataka Parijata (tr. Subramanya Sastri), ch. XVIII, v. 13, pp. 1010–1011). It is weaker, not empty of meaning.

Why do two people in the same dasha read differently?

The lord is the same, but its sign, house, dignity and strength are each person's own. Those decide the reading; the name of the dasha does not.

Deep dive: the planet-by-planet lists and the timing inside a dasha

How Parashara's lists are built, when in the dasha its results show, and what this builds on.

📋 Two lists for every planet

For each of the nine planets Parashara gives a list of good placements and a list of poor ones (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 47, vv. 7–87, pp. 577–589). The good lists repeat a few ideas: exaltation, the planet's own or moolatrikona sign, a kendra or a trikona, the 11th, the company of the 9th or 10th lord. The poor lists repeat the opposite: debilitation, the 6th, 8th or 12th, the company of malefics. Each list then names the areas of life the planet stands for. The next chapter reads the dasha of each house's lord in the same spirit.

⏳ Start, middle or end

Parashara also says when in the dasha the results show: a lord in the first third of its sign gives them early, in the middle third in the middle, in the last third towards the end; reversed for a retrograde planet, and always for Rahu and Ketu (ch. 47, vv. 3–4, pp. 576–577). Your Period's timing sentence for the running bhukti follows this rule. Another rule, by the kind of sign the lord is in, is on when results arrive in a dasha.

🧭 What this builds on

What a dasha and a bhukti are, and why a dasha is not good or bad by its name, is on dasha and bhukti.
