A monthly rasi palan is a short reading for everyone born with the Moon in one sign. It covers one solar month, from the Sun's entry into a sign to its entry into the next. Each planet's place is counted from your Moon sign, and a classical table gives the result of each house. The results are gathered under areas of life. The page ends with your chandrashtamam times and the days the Moon favours your sign.
☕ Five steps, one month
A rasi palan is written for a Moon sign, not for one person. Nava's rasi palan pages follow the shape of a traditional Tamil monthly column. Each covers a solar month. It begins when the Sun enters a sign and ends when the Sun enters the next one. Chithirai is the month of the Sun in Mesha (Aries), Vaikasi the month of the Sun in Vrishabha (Taurus), and so on round the year.
Step one: find each planet's sign during the month. Step two: count that sign from your Moon sign, which is the 1st house. Step three: look up the result of that planet in that house. An old South Indian manual gives every planet a result in each of the twelve houses (Kalaprakasika (1917 ed.), ch. XXXVI, pp. 207–208). A result is left out when another planet stands in the house that blocks it, a rule called vedha (Kalaprakasika (1917 ed.), ch. XXXVI, p. 210). Kalaprakasika itself says more: a well-placed planet so obstructed gives the opposite of its good result, and a badly placed one loses its power for evil and gives good. The book's own glossary (Kalaprakasika (1917 ed.), p. 248) and Jataka Parijata's note (Jataka Parijata (tr. Subramanya Sastri), ch. XIII, p. 833) say the obstructing planet cancels the result, and Nava does that, good or bad; the note adds that the obstructing planet, if strong, can reverse it. Never reversing it is Nava's own reading.
Step four: gather the results under six areas of life: work, money, family, home, studies and travel, and health and energy. The month then gets one word: favourable, mixed or needs care. Which area a result belongs to, how much each planet counts, and where the line falls between the three words are Nava's own choices, not the book's.
Step five: the Moon. It passes through a sign in about two and a quarter days, so it is read on its own. Chandrashtamam is the Moon in the 8th sign from yours, and the page gives it to the minute. A good day is one on which the Moon stays the whole day in a good house from your sign. Both houses, and Jupiter's good houses, are in the card “The houses a rasi palan reads” below.
Nava's rasi palan uses drik (Lahiri) positions and gives every time in Indian Standard Time. The current months are on the monthly rasi palan pages, linked under “The sections, in order” further down.
Three counts from your Moon sign
- Good days: the Moon in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th house from your Moon sign
- Chandrashtamam: the Moon in the 8th house from your Moon sign
- Jupiter favourable: in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th house from your Moon sign
- Mix-up: a rasi palan is about you alone. It is the same for everyone with your Moon sign; your own chart and running dasha decide far more.
- Mix-up: the month is the English calendar month. It is the solar month, from one entry of the Sun into a sign to the next, so it begins in the middle of an English month.
- Mix-up: a good day is good for anything. It only means the Moon favours your sign all day; the day's tithi, star and yoga still have to be checked.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the rasi palan month start in the middle of an English month?
Because it starts when the Sun enters a sign, and that falls around the middle of each English month. Day 1 is the day the Sun's entry falls before sunset; Nava dates the days for Chennai and gives the times in Indian Standard Time.
Is the rasi palan the same for everyone with my rasi?
Yes. It counts every planet from the Moon sign alone, so everyone born with the Moon in that sign reads the same page. Your own birth chart and running dasha matter far more for you.
Can I pick a day for something important from the good days alone?
No. A good day only means the Moon stays in a favourable house from your sign all day. That is one condition among several, so the rasi palan asks you to check the day's own panchangam before starting something important.
Deep dive: what each rasi page holds
The sections of a rasi page in order, the two slow planets, and what this builds on.
🗂️ The sections, in order
The month in short, with its one word. The month by area of life. Who gains and who should be careful. Changes during the month. Saturn and Jupiter. Chandrashtamam dates. Good days. A table of the planets for your sign, each with its house and the dates it holds that house. Then a short note on how the page is worked out, and common questions.
When a planet changes sign partway through the month, the reading for the rest of the month is given its own dated line: mid-month sign changes.
The current months: monthly rasi palan.
🪐 Saturn and Jupiter
The two slow planets get a section of their own. Saturn's line names 7½ Shani, Kantaka Shani or Ashtama Shani when Saturn is in one of those houses from your sign (what the books support). Jupiter's line says whether he is in one of his good houses; the same manual gives Jupiter its good results in exactly those houses (Kalaprakasika (1917 ed.), ch. XXXVI, p. 208).
