Parashara's book pairs each of the nine grahas with an avatara of Vishnu. The Sun is Rama. The Moon is Krishna. Mars is Narasimha. Mercury is Buddha. Jupiter is Vamana. Venus is Parasurama. Saturn is Kurma. Rahu is Varaha. Ketu is Matsya. This is a teaching of the tradition. Nothing in a chart is counted from it. The Nava app does not compute this. This page explains the rule only.
☕ Why a planet has an avatara
The second chapter of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra is a short one on the avataras. It says the unborn Lord took the form of the nine grahas. He did this to give every being the fruit of its own actions (karma). He also did it to put down the demonic and to uphold the divine. (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 2, vv. 3–4, p. 22.)
Then the chapter names one avatara for each graha. The list runs in the usual order of the planets, from the Sun to Ketu. It adds that the other avataras also came through the grahas. (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 2, vv. 5–7, p. 23.)
The chapter also says that four avataras are wholly divine. They are Rama, Krishna, Narasimha and Varaha. The others carry a share of the individual soul (jivatma) as well. (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 2, vv. 1–2, p. 22.)
When an avatara's work is done, its divine part merges back into its graha. At the end of creation, the grahas themselves merge into Vishnu. (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 2, vv. 8–13, p. 23.)
At a glance
- Sun — Rama

- (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 2, vv. 5–7, p. 23.)
- It is not a rule for reading a chart. No planet's strength or house changes because of it.
- It does not say a person is an avatara. It is about where the avataras came from.
- Kalki, the avatara still to come, is not in the list. The verse pairs nine avataras with nine grahas.
- Ketu's avatara is named Meena in the verse. Meena means fish, so it is Matsya.

Deep dive: where this sits in the book
A chapter of belief before the chapters of rules.
📜 Before the rules
Chapter 2 is short and comes before any technical rule. It gives the reason the tradition studies the grahas at all: they are forms through which the divine acts and through which karma bears fruit. (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 2, vv. 3–4, p. 22.)
The technical chapters that follow describe each graha's nature, friends and dignity. Start with the nine grahas.
