Ten Star Pairs Kalaprakasika Names Right After the Dinam Rule

Ten pairs of birth stars, each seven stars apart: six the book calls unsuitable and four it allows.

⚡ The short answer

Dinam porutham counts the 7th star from the bride's as not agreeing. Kalaprakasika (1917, p. 70) then names ten pairs of birth stars that are seven apart. Six it calls unsuitable: Krittika – Ashlesha; Ashlesha – Swati; Chitra – Purva Ashadha; Anuradha – Dhanishta; Dhanishta – Bharani; Shatabhisha – Krittika. Four it allows as exceptions: Ardra – Uttara Phalguni; Purva Phalguni – Anuradha; Chitra – Pushya; Punarvasu – Hasta.

☕ What these pairs are

Dinam counts from the bride's birth star to the groom's, both included, and the book counts the 7th step as unfavourable. Right after the Dinam rule, the book names ten pairs of birth stars. In every pair, one star is the 7th from the other: the book's footnote says so for four of them, and our count shows it for all ten.

The book splits the ten in two. Six pairs it calls unsuitable, which matches the Dinam rule. Four pairs it calls a good match even though they sit on the 7th step; its footnote calls these four an exception to the Dinam rule. The book says "a man and a woman born under" these pairs and does not say which partner holds which star, so these pages do not assign them.

After these ten, the book lists further star pairs, each with a specific prediction about the couple, their children or the family. These pages leave those pairs out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the book name these pairs?

Each pair is seven stars apart, the step Dinam counts as unfavourable. The book confirms six of them as unsuitable, and its footnote calls the other four an exception to the Dinam rule.

Which four pairs does Kalaprakasika allow?

Ardra – Uttara Phalguni; Purva Phalguni – Anuradha; Chitra – Pushya; Punarvasu – Hasta. The book calls each of them a good match.

Does it matter which partner has which star?

The book does not say. It speaks of a man and a woman born under the two stars, without naming who holds which, so these pages leave the pairs unassigned.

Does the book list other star pairs?

Yes. After these ten it lists more pairs, each with a specific prediction about the couple, their children or the family. These pages leave those out, as they do every outcome line.

From the source

🧮 Every pair, counted both ways

Each count includes both stars, as Dinam does. One direction always gives 7; the other gives 22.

By our own count, 22 is also the distance of the book's separate 22nd-star rule (Vainasika), which is counted from either person's star. The book does not say how these named pairs sit with that rule. The Dinam rules themselves are on the Dinam page.

🔍 One pair the footnote has the other way round

The book's footnote lists Pushya as the 7th from Chitra. Counting both stars, Pushya is the 22nd from Chitra, and Chitra is the 7th from Pushya. So that pair is still seven apart, as the footnote says, but counted from Pushya. Our reading is a slip in the footnote's wording; the pair itself is printed the same way in the list.

✂️ What this page leaves out

The book attaches an outcome to each list, and then gives further pairs, each with a prediction about the couple, their children or the family. This page keeps only the ten pairs printed right after the Dinam rule. The series starts at the ten poruthams overview.
