The Exception That Sets Aside Four Poruthams

Kalaprakasika says Rajju, Vedhai, Ganam and Rasi need not be considered under three conditions about the Moon signs. Read literally, the three can never hold together.

⚡ The short answer

Kalaprakasika (1917, p. 76) says Rajju, Vedhai, Ganam and Rasi need not be considered if the lords of the two Moon signs are the same, they are friendly planets, and the two Moon signs are opposite. The three can never all be true at once, so the line needs a reading. Ours is that any one of them is enough, with friendship read both ways on the book's own lists.

☕ What the line says, and why it cannot be read literally

After the ten checks, Kalaprakasika gives one exception. Rajju, Vedhai, Ganam and Rasi "need not be considered" if (1) the lords of the two Moon signs are the same planet, (2) they are friendly planets, and (3) the two Moon signs are opposite each other. All three conditions are about the Moon signs and their lords, the same facts Rasyadhipathi porutham uses.

Read as written, with and, the exception can never apply. If both lords are one planet, there is no pair of planets to be friends: a planet is not counted as its own friend. And no two opposite signs share a lord: the six opposite pairs are Aries – Libra (Mars, Venus); Taurus – Scorpio (Venus, Mars); Gemini – Sagittarius (Mercury, Jupiter); Cancer – Capricorn (Moon, Saturn); Leo – Aquarius (Sun, Saturn); Virgo – Pisces (Mercury, Jupiter). So condition (1) rules out both (2) and (3).

So the line has to be read some other way. Two readings fit: any one of the three is enough, or (1) alone, or else (2) together with (3). Our reading, which is ours and not the book's words, is that any one condition is enough. For condition (2) we read friendly on the book's own friend lists, and we ask that each lord list the other.

The book's words, and our reading

📖 As printed (p. 76)
  • Set aside: Rajju, Vedhai, Ganam and Rasi
  • (1) The lords of the two Moon signs are the same
  • (2) The lords are friendly planets
  • (3) The two Moon signs are opposite each other
  • Joined by and, so read literally all three must hold, which never happens
📖 Our reading
  • Any one of the three conditions is enough
  • (1) covers the signs that share a lord: Aries – Scorpio (Mars); Taurus – Libra (Venus); Gemini – Virgo (Mercury); Sagittarius – Pisces (Jupiter); Capricorn – Aquarius (Saturn)
  • (2) friendly means each lord is on the other's list in Kalaprakasika (pp. 74–75)
  • (3) covers all six pairs of opposite signs

Frequently Asked Questions

Which poruthams does the exception set aside?

Four: Rajju, Vedhai, Ganam and Rasi. Kalaprakasika says they need not be considered when the condition is met. The other six checks are unaffected.

Why can all three conditions never hold together?

If both Moon signs have the same lord, there are not two planets to be friends. And no two opposite signs share a lord. So the first condition rules out the other two.

How does this page read the exception?

As our reading, not the book's words: any one of the three conditions is enough, and friendly means that each lord is on the other's friend list in Kalaprakasika. The other possible reading is the first condition alone, or else the second and third together.

Which opposite signs also have lords that are friends both ways?

On Kalaprakasika's own lists: Aries – Libra; Taurus – Scorpio; Gemini – Sagittarius; Virgo – Pisces. For Cancer – Capricorn; Leo – Aquarius, the book does not print Saturn's friends, and neither the Sun's list nor the Moon's names Saturn. Under our reading condition (3) covers those two pairs anyway.

From the source

The arithmetic behind the reading, and what could settle it.

🧮 The opposite pairs, worked through

Each sign's lord is the usual one (Mars for Aries and Scorpio, Venus for Taurus and Libra, and so on). The six opposite pairs and their lords: Aries – Libra (Mars, Venus); Taurus – Scorpio (Venus, Mars); Gemini – Sagittarius (Mercury, Jupiter); Cancer – Capricorn (Moon, Saturn); Leo – Aquarius (Sun, Saturn); Virgo – Pisces (Mercury, Jupiter). No pair shares a lord.

Using Kalaprakasika's own friend lists (pp. 74–75), the opposite pairs whose lords each list the other are exactly: Aries – Libra; Taurus – Scorpio; Gemini – Sagittarius; Virgo – Pisces. So if the line meant (2) together with (3), these four would qualify. For Cancer – Capricorn; Leo – Aquarius, one lord is Saturn: the book names only Jupiter as Saturn's enemy and prints no friends for it, and neither the Sun's list nor the Moon's names Saturn. Under our any-one reading, condition (3) covers these two pairs as well.

The friend lists, and how they differ from the standard table, are on Rasyadhipathi porutham.

📚 What could settle the reading

The any-one reading is a choice, and it is labelled as ours. Muhurta Chintamani's chapter on marriage matching (ch. 6) may settle how the exception is meant; that chapter has not yet been taken into our sources for matching.
