Rasyadhipathi Porutham: Friendship of the Two Moon-Sign Lords

Kalaprakasika gives its own list of friends for each sign lord, and it is not the standard friendship table. Both are shown here.

⚡ The short answer

Rasyadhipathi porutham looks at the lords of the two Moon signs, for example Mars for Aries and Venus for Taurus, and asks whether they are friends. Kalaprakasika (1917, pp. 74–75) prints its own list of friends for each lord. Those lists differ from the standard natural-friendship table for every planet, and for Saturn the book names an enemy, Jupiter, and no friends.

☕ What is compared, and with which list

Every sign has a lord, a planet that rules it: Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, and so on. Rasyadhipathi porutham takes the lord of the bride's Moon sign and the lord of the groom's, and asks whether the two are friends. The book's section gives only the lists; that the two lords should be friends is how the check is used, and the book's exception on p. 76 speaks of the lords being friendly planets.

Kalaprakasika does not use the standard natural-friendship table of the classical birth-chart books, the one Nava Panchangam uses elsewhere. It prints its own list for each lord, and the two tables differ for every planet. For Saturn the book names only an enemy, Jupiter, and no friends. The book's matching rule uses its own lists, so this page teaches those, with the standard table beside them.

Some pairs are friends only one way. Jupiter's list in the book includes Saturn, but the book calls Jupiter Saturn's enemy. The book does not say whether a one-way friendship is enough for this check, and this page leaves that question open.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Rasyadhipathi porutham check?

Whether the lord of the bride's Moon sign and the lord of the groom's Moon sign are friends. Only the two Moon signs and their lords are used.

Why does this page show two friendship tables?

Because Kalaprakasika prints its own friend lists, and they differ for every planet from the standard natural friendship table. The book's rule uses its own lists. The standard table is the one the classical birth-chart books give, and the one Nava Panchangam uses elsewhere, so both are shown and the difference is named.

Which planets does Kalaprakasika list as Saturn's friends?

None. For Saturn the book says only that Jupiter is his enemy. The standard table counts Mercury and Venus as Saturn's friends.

Is it enough if only one lord counts the other as a friend?

The book does not say. Jupiter and Saturn show the problem: Jupiter's list includes Saturn, but the book calls Jupiter Saturn's enemy. This page leaves the question open.

The middle column is Kalaprakasika (1917, ch. XIII, pp. 74–75), as printed. The last column is the standard natural-friendship table, the one Nava Panchangam uses elsewhere; only the planets it counts as friends are listed, not the neutral ones.

📚 The books disagree here

Muhurta Chintamani, a muhurtha text that also teaches marriage matching, prints the standard friendship table as a plate on p. 167. Kalaprakasika prints a different one. So on this check the two books do not agree, and which list a reader follows is a choice worth knowing about.

The book also has an exception that sets four other checks aside. It names three conditions: the two Moon signs share one lord, their lords are friends, and the signs are opposite. How those three combine is a question of reading; see the exception that cancels four poruthams. Back to the overview: the ten poruthams.
