The Deeptadi states name a planet's mood by the sign it is in: Deepta when exalted, Swastha in its own sign, down to Khala in an enemy's sign; Vikala is added when it sits with a malefic and Kopa when it is combust. The Lajjitadi states name its condition from its house and company, such as Garvita when exalted. The twelve Shayanadi states come from a count of the planet's star, its number and navamsa, the birth star, the ghatis of birth and the lagna; a sub-state then needs the first letter of the person's name. Nava does not compute the Shayanadi states.
☕ Three more ways to describe a planet
The Deeptadi set goes by the sign's dignity (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 45, vv. 7–10, pp. 449–450), in the card “Deeptadi by the sign” below. Two more states are added on top of it: Vikala when the planet shares its sign with a malefic, and Kopa when it is combust, hidden by the Sun. The verse lists a ninth state, Dukkhita, but its condition cannot be read in the text, so Nava never gives it. A debilitated planet, or one in a great enemy's sign, takes no sign state: the verse gives none for them.
The Lajjitadi set looks at company and house (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 45, vv. 11–18, p. 451). Lajjita: in the 5th house with a node, the Sun, Saturn or Mars. Garvita: exalted or in its moolatrikona. Kshudita: in an enemy's sign, or joined or aspected by an enemy, or joined by Saturn. Trushita: in a water sign, aspected by a malefic and by no benefic. Mudita: in a friend's sign, or joined or aspected by a benefic, or joined by Jupiter. Kshobhita: joined with the Sun and joined or aspected by a malefic, or aspected by an enemy. Several can hold at once.
Jataka Parijata's translator gives the same six with different joins (Jataka Parijata (tr. Subramanya Sastri), ch. II, p. 91): for Mudita a friend's sign and a friend's company together, for Kshobhita combustion and a malefic's aspect together. The verse also leaves some words open: what counts as an aspect, a friend, or a water sign. What Nava follows: Parashara's either-or wording; an aspect is the full planetary aspect, friend and enemy are the compound relation, the water signs are Kataka, Vrischika and Meena, and joined means in the same sign.
The Shayanadi set has twelve states, from Shayana (lying down) to Nidra (sleep) (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 45, vv. 30–37, pp. 454–455). A planet's state comes from a count: its star, its number, its navamsa, the birth star, the ghatis of birth and the lagna. A further step needs a value for the first letter of the person's name, from a table only partly legible (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Santhanam–Kapoor ed.), ch. 45, p. 456). Nava does not compute the Shayanadi states.
The sign states by dignity
- Deepta (blazing): exalted
- Swastha (at ease): own sign, moolatrikona
- Pramudita (delighted): great friend's sign
- Santa (calm): friend's sign
- Deena, shown as Subdued: neutral sign
- Khala (harsh): enemy's sign
- Mix-up: a planet has one state from each set. Vikala and Kopa sit on top of the sign state, and several Lajjitadi states can hold together.
- Mix-up: Garvita and Deepta are the same. Deepta is exaltation alone; Garvita is exaltation or moolatrikona.
- Mix-up: Nava's badges are a reading of you. They name the planet's state; the book's readings of them are not shown.
Frequently asked questions
Which of these does Nava show?
The Deeptadi and Lajjitadi states, as badges beside each planet on the horoscope page. Kshudita is labelled Strained and Deena Subdued. The Shayanadi states are not shown.
Why is Shayanadi left out?
Its twelve states come from a count the app could make, but the book reads each one through a sub-state that needs a value for the first letter of the person's name, and the book's table of those values cannot be fully read.
What is Kopa?
The state of a combust planet, one too close to the Sun to be seen. It is added beside the planet's sign state.
Deep dive: the twelve Shayanadi names, and what this builds on
The list, and where the first sets are.
🛏️ Shayana to Nidra
In order: Shayana, Upaveshana, Netrapani, Prakashana, Gamana, Agamana, Sabha, Agama, Bhojana, Nrityalipsa, Kautuka and Nidra. Jataka Parijata's translator gives twelve states too, with some names and their order differing: his fifth and sixth are Gamanechcha and Gamana (Jataka Parijata (tr. Subramanya Sastri), ch. II, pp. 92–93). The burning of a planet by the Sun is on combustion.
🧭 What this builds on
The Baladi and Jagradadi states come first, on avasthas: age and wakefulness.
