Sade Sati means 'seven and a half'. It is the time Saturn takes to pass three signs: the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign, and the sign after it. Saturn stays about two and a half years in each sign. So Sade Sati lasts about seven and a half years. Saturn goes round all the signs in about 29½ years, so Sade Sati comes back about every 30 years. Ashtama Shani is Saturn in the 8th sign from your Moon sign. It lasts about two and a half years.
☕ The slowest planet in the panchangam
Saturn (Shani) is the slowest planet in the panchangam. It takes about 29½ years to go round all twelve signs. So it stays about two and a half years in each sign. When it moves into a new sign, this is called Sani peyarchi.
Saturn's place is counted from your Moon sign, which is house 1. Saturn in house 12, then house 1, then house 2, is Sade Sati. In Tamil it is called Ezharai Shani. Its three parts are often called the rising, middle and setting parts.
Saturn in house 8 is called Ashtama Shani. It lasts about two and a half years. Saturn in house 4 is called Kantaka Shani. House 4 comes from common almanac use. No old book we have read names it. The names are not the same in every tradition. One school calls house 8 Kantaka. Some almanacs in North India call houses 4 and 8 together Shani Dhaiya.
Tradition treats Sade Sati as a demanding time. It asks for patience and steady effort. It does not predict any particular event. What helps: keep a steady routine, plan big steps with care, and give work time. What it means for one person is read with their whole chart and their dasha.
The houses, counted from your rasi
- House 12 from your rasi: Sade Sati begins (the rising part).
- House 1, your rasi itself: the middle of Sade Sati.
- House 2: the last part of Sade Sati (the setting part).
- House 4: Kantaka Shani, about two and a half years (from almanac use).
- House 8: Ashtama Shani, about two and a half years.
- These periods are counted from your Moon sign, not from the Western Sun sign.
- Ordinary plans can go ahead. There is no need to stop life for seven and a half years.
- Saturn can step back into the last sign for a few months. Nava counts the whole period.
- A period is read with your whole chart. It is not a reason to buy remedies out of fear.
Frequently asked questions
How often does Sade Sati come?
About every 30 years. Saturn takes about 29½ years to come back to the same sign. Most people meet Sade Sati two or three times in their life. Each time they are at a different age and in a different situation.
Is Sade Sati exactly seven and a half years?
Not exactly. Saturn's speed changes. Near the edge of a sign, Saturn can go back into the last sign for some months. Nava counts the whole period. It starts when Saturn first enters house 12. It ends when Saturn finally leaves house 2. So each Sade Sati is a little different in length.
What is the difference between Sade Sati and Ashtama Shani?
Sade Sati covers three signs: houses 12, 1 and 2 from your Moon sign. It lasts about seven and a half years. Ashtama Shani is Saturn in house 8. It lasts about two and a half years. The two never happen at the same time.
Where does the idea come from?
It comes from long use in almanacs and by astrologers. It is not one rule from an old book. The old books we read for Nava do not give Sade Sati as a rule. Later astrologers use it in their examples. They start it when Saturn enters house 12 from the Moon. So names and details are not the same in every school.
Why do other websites give different dates?
Panchangams work out planet positions in different ways, so dates can differ. Some also count only Saturn's first entry. Nava counts the whole period.

Why one Sade Sati can have a gap in it. Where to find the dates for your rasi.
↩️ When Saturn steps back
Each year Saturn seems to move backwards for a few months. This is called retrograde. Near the edge of a sign, Saturn can enter a sign, go back to the last sign, and enter again. If we count each step, one Sade Sati looks like two or three.
Tradition speaks of one Sade Sati. So Nava joins the pieces. The period runs from the first entry to the last exit. The months when Saturn steps back are shown as a gap inside the period.
