What we believe

The panchangam is one of the oldest continuously-used pieces of applied astronomy anywhere — a five-dial instrument for reading where the sun and moon actually are. For most people it has been flattened into a printed grid, computed once for one town.

Anyone who lives by this calendar — in Chennai, Bengaluru, Singapore or San José — opens their own panchangam: computed for where they actually stand, tuned to how their family keeps it, and explained without anyone being told to be afraid.

The five promises

We compute; we don't copy. Your city's real sunrise and sunset, and every window we derive from them — Rahu Kalam, Gowri, Nalla Neram, the day strips — are calculated for your coordinates, not a 6:00 AM assumed for somewhere else. The tithi and nakshatra instants follow the almanac's own reckoning, which is a single reckoning rather than a per-city one. That distinction is deliberate and it is the tradition's, not a shortcut: under the Vākya engine a limb ends at one instant for everyone, exactly as the printed page has it, and what is local is the sunrise it is measured from. How Nava calculates sets out both.

Your tradition, not ours. Vākya or Dṛk; Smārta, Śrī Vaiṣṇava, Mādhva, Gauḍīya or Śaiva. The calendar bends to your practice, not the other way round. What ships today: both calculation engines, and the tradition profiles above, which today choose the day of Ekadashi, Karthigai Deepam and Krishna Jayanti. Nava is available in English and Tamil. More languages, and more regional reckonings, are work we have not finished — we would rather say so than imply otherwise.

How to check us

Promise 1 is only worth something if you can audit it, so we publish the working. How Nava calculates names both engines, their sources, and how they are checked: computed from the classical Vākyakaraṇa's own printed tables and verified against printed Tamil almanacs across 1,344 printed days.
