This did not begin as an idea for an app. It began with something I kept noticing at home: in my generation, the tradition survives only because somebody older is still holding it.

My mother keeps track of the star birthdays, so they get observed. She says which morning a ritual belongs to and which part of the day to leave alone, and that is how the rest of us know. Almost nobody my age reads the panchangam for themselves — we ask. And a practice that runs on asking is one person away from stopping. Nothing gets decided. There is simply nobody left to ask.

It is not that we stopped believing in it. A printed almanac asks you to know your star, find the right column, convert ghati to clock time, and remember which of the day’s windows you were told to avoid. Miss one step and you are guessing. The English calendar asks nothing of you at all — so that is the one we reach for, out of friction, not out of doubt.

None of that is the panchangam’s fault. It is one of the most complete systems of timekeeping anyone has built, and it still works exactly as it always did. What has not kept up is the way it reaches the people who would use it. Closing that gap is the only thing this app is trying to do.

The panchangam is one of the oldest instruments still in daily use — a five-limb reading of where the sun and moon actually are, and of what that means for the day in front of you.

For most people it has been flattened into a printed grid, computed once for one town, and read through someone else’s interpretation. The instrument still works. The way it reaches people doesn’t.

Approachable and authentic are not opposites. Everything in this app rests on that one conviction: you can remove every hurdle in front of a tradition without removing anything from it. Nothing here is made simple by leaving something out.

That second number is why this app exists in the shape it does. A family keeping this calendar in Kuala Lumpur or New Jersey has never had a printed page computed for where they live — they have been reading a Chennai page and hoping.

What stands between a family and their own calendar

Four things, in the order they cost families the most. Each one is a hurdle, and each one is removable without touching the substance underneath.

It assumes you already know. Nothing here is shown as a term you are expected to have grown up with. Every limb, window and score is one tap from what it means and why it matters today — and it says so in plain words, in English or Tamil. No Sanskrit as decoration, and no ambiguity left for you to resolve.
It was computed for one town, for nobody in particular. Your sunrise, your sunset and every window derived from them are calculated for your coordinates, and the reading is set against your birth star, your tradition and your running dasha. A generic answer is the fastest way to teach someone that the calendar does not really apply to them.
It is easy to forget, and forgetting is how it ends. Thirunakshatram (star) birthdays, monthly observances, ritual anniversaries, family vows — these survive only while somebody remembers them. Nava remembers, for every person in your family, on your city and your tradition, and tells the rest of the household too.
It usually arrives through somebody else. For most families the calendar is now a phone call, an opinion and a bill — with no way to check any of it. That one is worth a section of its own.

This knowledge was never meant to be a private asset. A panchangam is a public reckoning — printed, argued over, corrected, checked by anyone who could read it. Somewhere along the way, for a lot of families, it turned into something you telephone someone about, pay for, and cannot verify.

Nava puts the reckoning back in your hands. Day scores, auspicious windows and the reasoning behind both come from documented classical conventions and printed almanacs — not from whoever happened to answer the phone — and every factor that moved a score is named on the day it applies. You can disagree with us knowing exactly what we weighed. What we will never do is hand you a reason to be afraid and then sell you the cure.

We compute; we don’t copy. Your city’s real sunrise and sunset, and every window we derive from them — Rahu Kalam, Gowri, Nalla Neram, the day strips — are calculated for your coordinates, not a 6:00 AM assumed for somewhere else. The tithi and nakshatra instants follow the almanac’s own reckoning, which is a single reckoning rather than a per-city one — that is the tradition’s design, not a shortcut. How Nava calculates sets out both.

Your tradition, not ours. Vākya or Dṛk; Smārta, Śrī Vaiṣṇava, Mādhva, Gauḍīya or Śaiva. The calendar bends to your practice, not the other way round — and Nava always shows you which reckoning it is answering from. What ships today: both calculation engines, switchable in your profile, and the tradition profiles above, which today choose the day of Ekadashi, Karthigai Deepam and Krishna Jayanti. Nava is available in English and Tamil. More languages, and more regional reckonings, are work we have not finished — we would rather say so than imply otherwise.

Promise 1 is only worth something if you can audit it, so we publish the working. How Nava calculates names both engines, their sources, and how they are checked: computed from the classical Vākyakaraṇa’s own printed tables, and verified against printed Tamil almanacs across 1,344 printed days.

Where a published almanac and our calculation disagree, we say so on the page rather than quietly picking a side. An app that hides its disagreements is asking for the same trust it was built to replace.

A panchangam has never been a private document. It is how a household, a temple and an extended family stay in step — which is why Nava has shared feeds, family circles and invitations built in from the start rather than bolted on. One person can keep the calendar for everyone who matters to them.
