Privacy Policy

Nava Panchangam ("the app", "we", "us") is a Tamil Panchangam (Hindu calendar/astrology) application available at navapanchangam.com and as an Android app. This page explains what data the app collects and how it is used.

Account data

If you create an account, we store the information you provide: your email address, a hashed password (we never store your password in plain text), an optional display name, and birth details (date, time, and location) used to calculate your personal astrological profile. We also store your preferred calculation location and panchang system.

Device location

If you tap “Use my location”, the app asks your device for its approximate position once, with your permission. The position is rounded on your device to about 11 km before it is sent, and is used only to find the nearest city in our list; we do not store it or keep a history of it. The city you end up with is saved like any city you pick by hand. The app never reads your location in the background, and nothing happens unless you tap the button.

Feature data

If you use them, we store the content you create within the app: gift ledger entries (the gift/favor records you add), alert rules and the notifications generated from them, and any collaborative "feeds" you create, join, or post to. This data is used only to provide the corresponding feature to you and, where you explicitly share it, to other users you invite (e.g. shared feeds).

Account closure and retention

Account closure removes or anonymises the identifying profile and deletes personal configuration described on the account-deletion page. Some shared, financial, product-accuracy, and accountability records may be retained under an anonymised account identifier; that page lists the current categories and how to ask for additional review.

Sessions and cookies

When you log in, we set a single first-party session cookie to keep you signed in. This cookie is not used for advertising or cross-site tracking. On Android, the app displays the same service over HTTPS inside its embedded WebView, and the same session mechanism applies.

Offline data and notifications

The app caches previously viewed panchang data on your device (browser storage) so it can work offline. If you enable notifications, we also store a device or browser push registration so our server can send the alerts you configure. Android notifications are delivered through Firebase Cloud Messaging; browser notifications use Web Push. Cached data stays on your device. You can remove the server-side push registration by signing out, and you can revoke notification permission in your device or browser settings.

Product analytics

When analytics is enabled for a release, we use PostHog to collect page views and a limited set of product-usage events that the app explicitly sends. Automatic interaction capture and session recording are disabled. PostHog stores an analytics identifier in local storage. We do not send birth details or panchang readings in these product events, and we do not use them for advertising or cross-site tracking.

Error reporting

When error reporting is enabled, we use Sentry to receive technical error and diagnostic information so we can find and fix failures. Performance tracing is disabled and Sentry is configured not to send default personal information. On our server, request bodies and local variables are excluded, and sensitive fields such as email, birth details, credentials, tokens, and precise coordinates are redacted before an event is sent.

Service providers

Firebase Cloud Messaging, PostHog, and Sentry process the limited information described above on our behalf when their corresponding features are enabled. They are not used to serve advertising in Nava Panchangam.

What we don't do

We do not use third-party advertising trackers, and we do not sell your data to anyone.

Data deletion

You can request deletion of your account and associated data at any time. In the app, open Profile → Privacy & account → Delete account, or visit the account-deletion page in any browser. The page explains what is deleted, what may be retained, and how to submit the request.
